Confluence Cyclery is a full-service bike shop serving Confluence, PA, the Great Allegheny Passage Bicycle Trail, and Southwestern Pennsylvania. Located at 500 Hughart Street on the town square, it is easily accessible to people travelling the bike trail as well as those who prefer to enter town on the motorized roadways.
The location and building was purchased by Brad and Maureen Smith in 2006 in preperation for their move to Confluence for "retirement". Renovations started occurring during weekend trips to Confluence before they moved to Confluence permenantly in the summer of 2008, at which point renovations became a full time job.
The Cyclery opened for business in October, 2008, with renovations continuing to the present. In addition to bicycle repairs and tune-ups, the Cyclery offers a complete selection of cycling accessories, snacks, and a computer terminal as well as WiFi that provides free internet access to patrons.
During renovations, an effort to promote environmentally friendly technologies was pursued. The windows in the front of the store were replaced with high-efficiency argon-filled double paned glass. The brick walls are insulated with a combination of sprayed closed-cell foam and conventional fiberglass batts. Heating is now provided by radiant floor heating along with 9 suspended fans for air circulation. This arrangement, along with the windows, provides excellent warmth in the winter at a fraction of normal heating costs. In addition, Hot water is supplied by on-demand water heaters; the only water that gets heated up is that which will be used and the Men’s restroom has a waterless urinal that saves thousands of gallons of water a year.
The building that houses Confluence Cyclery is turning into a multi-use structure. It now houses Polly’s Antiques as well as the Confluence office of Fives and Duchene, Attorneys at Law. Future plans for the Cyclery also include the renovation of two apartments above the store that will be available for vacation rental in the summer of 2010.
